JACK
An original musical for our time...
Meet Jack, the poor and disheartened character who lives in a tiny apartment in Coney Island, along with her exhausted mother and bothersome sibling. Bullied and outcast, Jack takes refuge in arcade games, playing them daily on the paint-stripped pier. One day, instead of just playing the video game, Jack becomes a part of it, lost within a magical world where giant challenges must be faced. Come discover how our cast of unusual characters help Jack win The Beanstalk game in an unforgettable festive theatre experience for young and old alike!
Buy your tickets today - December 8, 9 and 10 - by clicking here.
Thank you to our Lead Producer Jay Eisenhofer and all of our supporters who have sponsored this show.
Why Science?
Chickenshed NYC is different from other theatre companies in so many ways but one of its most unique aspects is the infusion of science into its art. Two years ago, Chickenshed and the Simons Foundation found each other, and we are so grateful for their support and inspiration. Each semester, a different science concept is explored by the Players through educational visits from expert scientists and, their own discoveries. Whether it was ecosystems in Central Park in Ever After, climate change in Don't Stop Believin' or AI in JACK - the infusion of science brings creativity and meaning into the thought-provoking theatre we offer.
Many thanks to Science Sandbox at Simons Foundation who support boundary-pushing, interdisciplinary projects that immerse science in culture. You can learn more about their work by clicking here.
The Chickenshed NYC Intern
The Chickenshed methodology is about lifting one another up to enable everyone to shine. The theatre practitioners meet weekly to offer observations and suggestions that ensure all the Players are engaged in the workshops and theatre journey. From a young age, Players are paired and grouped to share ideas and help each other. This is expected of everyone.
However, there are a handful of Players who want to take their passion for Chickenshed and do more. These are our Interns. Interns play a key role helping in workshops other than their own, offering feedback to the Practitioners, volunteering at events and taking the lead in devising the Spring performance. Interns have a huge impact on the work that is created and we are so grateful for their energy and belief in the values of Chickenshed.
The Simons Foundation recently created a short film about one of our interns. Please click here to enjoy!
Winter/Spring Registration is Open
We are excited to announce that registration is open for next semester. The science focus will be around the eclipse happening in NYC on April 8th, 2024. A NASA scientist will workshop with the Players as they devise this new jukebox musical - 4 Minutes 28 Seconds. Click here to register and join in the fun!
Poised to Grow
As always - please bring friends and family to see JACK and encourage anyone you know to join us for the next semester. We have flyers to share with your schools, community centers and places of worship.
We are also looking for an Upper West Side location to run an additional weekday workshop. If you know of a 400 sq. ft. flexible space that is available for rent after school at reasonable rates, please let us know.
Contact Elaine or Elliot or email ali@chickenshednyc.org regarding either of the above.
End Of Year Giving: Our Practitioners Lead the Way
On November 28th we officially kick off the giving season with Giving Tuesday. With a goal of $5,000, we hope to start our giving season strong and we are so grateful to our practitioners who are leading the way with their gifts! Please join them in making a gift today, Giving Tuesday, or any day.
To everyone who has supported Chickenshed this year, we send a heartfelt thank you as we are filled with gratitude.
