Get to Know Our Chickenshed Players
Milena is a busy 5th grader as she dances several times a week and competes in synchronized figure skating! One of her favorite places in Manhattan is the Bryant Park ice arena, especially as the sun is rising during an early morning practice. Milena heard about Chickenshed NYC from Cyndi, the CSNYC Artistic Director, and finally had time in her schedule to try it during lockdown. Now, Chickenshed is a priority because she enjoys the friendly atmosphere and the respect that all Players have for one another. Milena says the whole experience has surprised her, and she finds herself more aware of social issues and the people around her. She has enjoyed learning different ways to communicate and appreciates how the teaching artists provide a level playing field so that everyone can contribute equally. Her mom, Linda, says “it is one thing to try to educate your children about being differently abled, it is a whole different experience to be immersed in working together toward a final goal. It really is about appreciating everyone’s gifts.” They both look forward to meeting the teaching artists and other Players face-to-face for the first time!!
Olivia is a junior in high school and starting to think about college. At her school, Olivia is president of the book club, plays libero/ defensive specialist for the volleyball team and is a musical theater star, of course! Olivia discovered Chickenshed through Cyndi as she is part of Shuffle’s Studio, a musical theater pre-professional group. Olivia loves musical theater which is what interested her most about Chickenshed. Her favorite old musical is Les Misérables because of the music, and her favorite more recent one is Hadestownbecause she likes the simple set design and jazz undertones. She, her parents and younger twin sisters love to watch movies together. Her favorite place in NYC is the Central Park reservoir at sunset and she dreams of skiing in Switzerland. Olivia enjoys the friendships she has made at Chickenshed and appreciates the space it gives her to relax and be herself. She is inspired by how the other Players have grown in confidence and can’t wait to be back in the room with everyone.
Mason is 8 years old and lives in Charlotte, North Carolina with his parents, his dog Millie and his cat Sammy. Mason’s mom, Heather, learned about Chickenshed from her cousin Shari Sapp, the CSNYC Board Chair. Mason’s favorite part of Chickenshed is learning to sign. He has friends from his YMCA camps that communicate differently so he thought it would be fun to learn. He has also made new friends across the country in California through CP1 and sometimes plays online video games with them. What surprised Mason most about Chickenshed is how dramatic he likes to be!! It surprised his mom too as he had never shown interest in theatre. She has enjoyed seeing the confidence that Chickenshed brings out of Mason and is impressed by the quality of the teaching artists and the relationship they have with the kids. Outside of Chickenshed, Mason plays basketball and flag football, likes spicy food and is a big reader. The funniest thing about him is that his hair looks just like his favorite YouTube gamer, Preston Playz. Check it out – it really does! If you ever get to Charlotte, Mason suggests you visit Great Wolf Lodge and ride the Howling Tornado water slide.
What's Next? An Original Musical
FANTASTICAL! We are so excited to create and perform our first original musical this spring. The Players are part of the process from beginning to end – workshops and rehearsals have already begun. It isn’t too late to participate so if you know someone who would like to take part – ask them to check out the website. The performance will be filmed and then live-streamed on June 19th. Look for an e-invitation, coming your way soon.
Help Us Continue to Build The Shed
While our $100,000 goal has been met, there is continued need for your support. Chickenshed NYC relies on financial gifts to fund its operations. Creating, developing and executing inclusive original theatre takes both resources and conviction. If you haven’t yet participated, your gift at any level is a gesture of faith in Chickenshed’s mission. After all, when everyone is included – everyone flourishes. Please click here to help build something beautiful.
We hope you enjoyed our first newsletter. We look forward to showcasing people from our talented community in our future issues..
